LAW OFFICE OF BALCOM & CARBONE

“AGGRESSIVE CRIMINAL DEFENSE”

There is no finer compliment for a

law firm than being told by a judge

that their expertise causes cases to

resolve favorably.

“We knew our hard work was paying

off,” says Tim Balcom “when a judge

observed that prosecutors have become

more willing to resolve cases with us

because they know we’ll go all the way

to trial, and often times we win.” Underlining

his point, Balcom received an

acquittal on a DUI case moments after

he appeared in court on a high profile

case covered extensively by the media.

Both Tim Balcom and his law partner,

Toni Carbone, credit their successes to

their specialization in criminal defense

work. Both Balcom and Carbone immediately became involved in criminal litigation after graduating from McGeorge School of Law. Tim Balcom has worked in every possible role in the criminal justice system – as a military policeman, prosecutor, defense attorney, and pro tem judge. Toni Carbone has been a defense attorney for her entire career, handling both trial and appellate level work.

The firm handles cases ranging from

simple traffic matters to murder. “There’s

a misconception that citizens who are

accused of crimes are evil thugs,” says

Balcom. “The reality is a lot of our clients

are upper or middle class citizens that

have been charged with crimes that are

borderline at best.”

The contrasting personalities of the

firm’s two partners also contribute to its

success. Balcom’s passion and intensity

are perfectly suited for certain cases,

where Carbone, whom Balcom calls the

“Mother Theresa of criminal defense,” takes

a softer approach. “Her sincere compassion

affects both judges and prosecutors,

and she is able to receive favorable outcomes.”

These contrasting styles have led to impressive

results. Balcom has won several

high-profile cases at the trial level, while

Carbone has succeeded in the California

Courts of Appeal. One of Carbone’s more

successful appeals resulted in a published

decision that changed law statewide.

In 2006 the firm pursued and hired Alexander

Henry as its first associate. Since

his hiring, Henry brought a successful

appeal challenging the constitutionality

of a Roseville city ordinance, resulting in

the city repealing the law.

This year the firm hired Christine Morse

Galves, who has consulted in both the

Office of the Governor and the legislature.

Galves has written several publications,

and is an experienced negotiator

who secured a dismissal in her very first

appearance on behalf of Balcom and

Carbone.
